February 28, 2012 (Houston) — alliantgroup’s Managing Director Jeremy Fingeret, J.D., was invited to join a prestigious group of tax legal advisors at the American Bar Association’s Section of Taxation Midyear Meeting in San Diego on February 17, 2012. Jeremy joined other distinguished panelists including Alex Sadler and Jeff Moeller of Ivins Phillips & Barker; Mary Monahan of Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP; and Roger Kave, Counsel for the IRS Large Business & International Division.
The group presented insights and strategies related to navigating the federal Research and Development Tax Credit. Jeremy brought experience as both a litigator and leading alliantgroup’s team of experts who have prepared thousands of R&D tax credit studies for businesses across the country.
The panelists discussed their recent experiences handling significant Research & Development tax credit cases such as McFerrin, Union Carbide, FedEx, and Bayer and how these cases have helped shape the current R&D landscape for defining things such as qualified research activities and expenditures, sampling methodologies, and substantiation of research activities. IRS Counsel Roger Kave provided perspectives from the Service side.
Jeremy Fingeret and Roger Kave were able to discuss their participation in meetings initiated by the IRS to bring providers and Service officials together. This continued dialogue has been established to improve issue resolution and to continue to explore topics such as “safe harbors” and standards for applying the R&D tax credit. In meetings last year hosted by alliantgroup, IRS officials spoke with CPA firms with regard to helping their clients with R&D tax credit claims.
“Tax filings are becoming increasingly complex, therefore it’s been extremely valuable for alliantgroup, our clients, and the CPAs we work with to hear directly from the IRS on important issues. Having IRS Counsel participate in our panel discussion further illustrates the Service’s commitment to working with taxpayers in the area of R&D tax credits,” said alliantgroup’s Fingeret.
